Female Victim Stabbed in Birmingham Bus Shelter Attack Succumbs to Injuries
A woman who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault near a bus shelter within Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, who was 34, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 9 PM GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham court on Monday, charged over the violent incident.
Originally charged of attempted murder but following the woman's death charges were upgraded to murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities stated police personnel will remain in the downtown area on Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who may have seen Mr Rafael, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, dark headwear, trainers and rucksack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred near Bullring retail complex, opposite the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Police said they classified it as a random violent act with investigators stating efforts continue to determine why it happened.
Eyewitness Reports
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, recounted the emergency response when she finished her work period at about 22:00 Friday night.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", adding that some of her colleagues heard a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many co-workers use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk fundamentally, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, mentioned visiting to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern regarding the incident.
"It makes me worried for my girlfriend," he stated.
"She doesn't drive and works at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked occurred, understandably, it's horrible."
